Rainforests

A journey throughout Madagascar’s rainforests isn’t just sightseeing; it’s participating in something sacred: the protection of one of the last great natural sanctuaries on Earth.

Waking up to the echoing call of the Indri Indri (the largest living lemur) in Andasibe Mantadia National Park, just about 4h from the capital and spending about 2 to 3 nights in one of the luxury and comfortable lodges like Mantadia Lodge or Manjarano Lodge to seek for other wildlife such as the golden sifaka, bamboo lemur or the night active mouse lemur, but also birds like ground rollers or amphibians and reptiles.  Then spending about the same length of time in The Nature Lodge of the Amber Mountain National Park or The Litchi Tree as local luxury accommodation. The park offers a large variety of landscape including sacred waterfalls as well as lush green and high canopy rainforest. The fauna and flora are also very rewarding with chameleons and lemurs.

Rainforests, Walks & Lookouts

Spending the days exploring the rainforest of Ranomafana National Park will also allow to discover different variety of bamboo lemurs, only found in Madagascar. From the golden bamboo lemur to the greater bamboo lemur and the eastern grey bamboo lemur. Staying at a lodge like the Thermal hotel to enjoy the natural hot spring of the hotel or the Centrest Hotel located in the authentic village of Ranomafana.

Baobabs

Discover the unique wonders of Madagascar: the Baobabs, those majestic gigantic trees, and the Tsingy, a dramatic limestone karst rock formations.

Baobabs in Malagasy are called Reniala which literally means the Mother of the forest. It due to its size and its age. Seeping a cocktail while the sun is setting along the baobab avenue or catching the first sunlight in the morning when the red bark of the baobabs are the best times to enjoy this unique experience at the world famous Baobab avenue.

Tsingy

Then carrying on the dirt road to catch the two ferries to reach the Tsingy of Bemaraha National Park. Exploring the Tsingy itself to seek for the Deckens Sifaka or the brown lemur. This limestone pinnacle forest is offering a memorable lifetime experience by walking on the top edge or going through the narrow and cool bottom of the rock formation.

The northern side of the country also has the Tsingy of Ankarana that could be combined with the Amber Mountain National park and ending up by Nosy Be for a beach and water activities.

Crossing the suspended bridges in the Tsingy National Park is definitely taking you to a unique level of exploration.

Road Trips

The roads across Madagascar are challenging but very worthy on board of comfortable SUVs, offering a breathtaking variety of scenery.

Driving along the Southern N7 for instance will take you from Asian-like terraced ricefields in the central highland, through woodcarving and craft workshop in the cities of Antsirabe and Ambositra; coming across the granite boulders and zebu (local cow) herd of the southern plateau and the colorful sandstone mountain to end up in the south western coast with its baobabs and spiny forest along the Mozambique canal white sandy beach.

Urban & Rural Exploration

Accommodation like the Le Jardin du Roy and Le Relais de la Reine in Isalo National Park are selected to spend the nights and recovers from either the driving or the hikes in the parks. The roads are a bit rough at some point but every pothole is worth the encounter with the ring-tailed lemurs at Anja reserve or the Isalo National Park, the bamboo lemur at Ranomafana National park or the endemic ground roller bird at the baobab forest in Mangily. To end the day at the beautiful sunset at the natural window of Isalo or by the balcony of your bungalow at Les Dunes d`Ifaty or Les Paradisiers looking over the ocean.

By The Beach

From Nosy Be and Anjajavy and different archipelago the North to the pirates island of Ste Marie in the East, Madagascar has more than one beach heaven to escape to, with its 5000 km of coastline.

Deep dive, snorkel or go for whale watching from the shore of the Nosy be island located in the north western side of the country, take a boat ride to explore the nearby islet like the Nosy Komba for its black lemur or the Nosy Tanikely for its rich and diverse marine life, or the Nosy Iranja for its snorkeling and postal card spot. The whale watching between July to September could be enjoyed after a comfortable night sleep at The Princesse Bora Lodge or The Voaara Lodge in Sainte Marie located in the eastern side of the country; followed by an excursion the nearby Iles aux Nattes and its local fisherman village.

Diving

High end luxury could be met at the Nosy Ankao and the Miavana by Time and Tide, reachable only by helicopter. Anjanjavy le Lodge in the north western side also offers an idyll vacation with its family of Coquerel Sifaka dancing from the nearby forest. Sail or go for Boat excursions in the mangrove nearby to spot some water birds and amphibians.
